US, Russia Trade Accusations of Weaponizing Space

The US and Russia are embroiled in a heated dispute over the militarization of space. On Tuesday, Russia accused the US of seeking to place weapons in space, following Washington's veto of a Russian non-proliferation proposal at the UN.

Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for Russia's Foreign Ministry, criticized the US, stating their actions aim to turn space into a "military confrontation zone" rather than keeping it weapon-free.

This is the latest chapter in an ongoing war of words. The US previously expressed concern about Russia's "anti-satellite capability," while Russia vehemently denied accusations of possessing such a system.

Both nations have presented competing proposals at the UN. Russia vetoed the US initiative, which focused solely on banning nuclear weapons in space. The US, along with its allies, blocked Russia's broader proposal for a complete ban on all space weapons.

Accusing the US of hypocrisy, Russia claims the US proposal is a mere distraction and lacks genuine commitment to a comprehensive ban. The US, on the other hand, dismisses Russia's proposal as "gaslighting."

Despite the tensions, cooperation on the International Space Station (ISS) continues. Both nations collaborate in transporting astronauts to and from the ISS, showcasing a rare area of ongoing partnership amidst a strained relationship.

The future of space exploration hangs in the balance as the US and Russia remain at odds over weaponization. Whether diplomacy can prevail and lead to a ban on space weapons is yet to be seen.
