New Delhi, August 5, 2025 — Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik passed away on Tuesday afternoon around 1 PM at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi. He was 79 years old and had been battling kidney-related ailments for several months.
Satya Pal Malik began his political journey in student politics and was first elected as an MLA in 1974. Throughout his career, he was associated with several political parties including the Bharatiya Kranti Dal, Janata Dal, Congress, and eventually the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He served as the Governor of multiple states including Bihar, Goa, Odisha (additional charge), Meghalaya, and Jammu & Kashmir.
His most notable tenure was as the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir from August 23, 2018, to October 30, 2019. It was during his tenure that the Government of India revoked Article 370 on August 5, 2019, thereby stripping Jammu and Kashmir of its special constitutional status — a historic and controversial moment in Indian politics.
His death was confirmed by both family sources and hospital authorities. He had been in critical condition for several weeks prior to his passing.
Malik was known for his forthright and outspoken nature, often voicing criticism of his own government when he felt it necessary. He remained a vocal figure in public discourse, even after demitting office, and was respected for his fearless approach.
Details of his funeral and last rites are expected to be announced shortly. India mourns the loss of a seasoned and bold political leader.
