Hyderabad, May 24, 2025 – Telangana's Director General of Police (DGP), Dr. Jitender, has directed all police commissioners and superintendents across the state to conduct a comprehensive review of gun licences issued within their jurisdictions.
According to official data, Telangana currently has 7,125 active gun licences authorising the use of 9,294 firearms. Of these, 510 licences were granted in the past three years. The DGP's directive aims to ensure that all licences are issued and renewed in strict compliance with the Arms (Amendment) Act, 2019.
The review will focus on several key areas:
Adverse Notices: Licences held by individuals who have come under adverse notice will be scrutinised. Police officials are instructed to issue notices to such licence holders, requiring them to provide valid reasons for possessing firearms. Licences may be renewed only if the reasons are deemed satisfactory.
Re-registration for Non-Residents: Licence holders who no longer reside in Telangana must re-register their firearms under the appropriate police jurisdiction. If their current whereabouts are unknown, notices should be sent to their last known addresses.
Verification of Need: At the time of renewal, police are to verify the legitimacy of the applicant's need for a weapon. Licences should not be renewed if the justification is unsatisfactory.
This initiative underscores the state's commitment to preventing the misuse of firearms and ensuring public safety. The DGP has emphasised that all actions must adhere to due process and legal standards.
The review is expected to enhance accountability and transparency in the issuance and renewal of gun licences across Telangana.
